Crop Production Department

The joint companies of Magorganic Kft. have a total of 1,300 ha of arable land and 1,500 ha of grassland. Effective management is all the more important because the value of the „golden-crown” (hungarian quality measure for land quality) of arable land is low, ranging from 10 to 20 golden crowns. These areas are located on the borders of Tiszafüred, Tiszaszőlős, Tiszaigar, Tiszaörs and Tiszaszentimre, where the average annual rainfall is between 400-500 mm, and its distribution is not very optimal, as most of it falls in the wintertime and drought periods are usual in the area.

The native Hungarian gray gulls of Bio Bos Kft graze on the grasslands, but we have to mow about 300 ha in order to establish a winter feed base for the animals.

Our collegues

In crop production, the number of permanent employees consists of 12 agricultural machinery operators, 4 machinery mechanics and 1 warehouse worker. Workers are managed by the production manager and the department manager.

Management systems

The company group has been operating in accordance with the ecological conditions for more than 15 years, but until 2016 it also carried out conventional farming in parallel. From 1 January 2016, we only continue organic farming in the entire area, obeying the conditions of a sustainable and environmentally conscious farming system everywhere.

In the cultivation of CEREALS, the primary consideration is the choice of resistant, high-growth varieties that leave large straws. We have already tried several of the varieties bred abroad, but with great satisfaction we also used the KG Kunhalom variety, for example, among the landscape-specific winter wheat varieties, which showed good quality, high yields and excellent disease resistance.

When choosing SUNFLOWER varieties, we choose on the basis of disease resistance, high oil content and stable yield, here both Hungarian-bred and foreign-bred varieties occur.

When choosing the MAIZE variety, we are primarily looking for varieties with a low FAO number, as we want to harvest early, with low moisture content. We do not grow silage maize varieties because we want to base our mass feed base on hay and silage made from safer autumn cereal mixes. Therefore, in the future, the area under corn in the crop structure will decrease.

Sustainability

It is important for us to participate in ecological research, so as in previous years, we are open to various variety experiments, in which the growth vigor, content, disease resistance and yield of varieties are examined. We are happy to deal with nutrient supplementation, cover plant sowing and tillage technology experiments.

It is important for our group of companies that we cultivate organic farming to a high degree, within an intensive framework, therefore we will introduce precision farming in the next period, the construction of which we started in 2016 and our investments in machinery in 2018 point in this direction. We have RTK precision automatic steering tractors, a balanced fertilizer spreader, with the help of which we deliver the soil improvement and nutrient replenishment products approved in organic farming with precision technology.

Our tillage primarily prefers systems without rotation, and we are currently experimenting with minimum and No till cultivation, as well as by incorporating cover crop tillage into our farming system.

We want to operate and test long-term sustainable, environmentally conscious management systems.

Livestock Depatment

Our companies deal with the keeping and breeding of native Hungarian gray cattle.

We are members of the Hungarian Gray Cattle Breeders Association.

We are also involved in the conservation of “VP native animals in situ” EU programme.

The size of the herd is between 950-1100 individuals. The change in headcount within a year is shaped by the time of calving and animal sales.

In addition to native, pure-bred breeding, there is also the possibility of direct cross-breeding, which improves the profitability of keeping the breed.

During the grazing season, the bio-status herd grazes on 3 nurseries on the “NATURA 2000” primeval grassland rented from the Hortobágy National Park Directorate.

During the wintering period, we supply our animals with organic mass feed produced in the areas of the company group.

Our collegues

The number of permanent employees consists of 4 herdsman and 2 animal caretakers. Employee management is provided by the site manager and the department manager. Periodically 2 herdsman helps the industry.

Stock details

  1. Maintaining pure stock
  2. 450 suckler cows with purebred Hungarian gray breeding bulls are in a harem-like insemination system, in a seasonal calving cycle (12.15-04.30)
  3. The born heifer calves replace the lost native individuals and we sell them to other farms as breeding heifers.
  4. Some of the born bull calves are sent to a bull breeding farm for breeding bulls, the other part is sold as a young animal without fattening.

2. Keeping and breeding purebred young heifers

  • The selected heifers are reared in heifers until maturity (36 months of age).
  • From April to October we place them on pasture and during the wintering period in a “wintering place”.
